The chief responsibility of this Surgical Clinical Reviewer in Healthcare Systems Engineering is to collect and submit reliable data through high-quality data compilation, documentation, and entry into the national data base of all eligible Thoracic surgeries for the hospital and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Harvest public reporting submissions.


The Surgical Clinical Reviewer will work closely with members of the Department of Thoracic Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and assist in implementation as appropriate. This database and included surgeries are specific to the Department of Thoracic Surgery. This position requires patient follow up for a variety of thoracic surgical patients ranging from 30 day to 5 years along with month to month case selection.

 

The ideal candidate will have some knowledge/experience of Thoracic medical terminology. This will be a data-focused position and will not involve direct patient care.


KEY FUNCTIONS


Data Collection and Reporting  
  • The Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) for Thoracic is responsible for case selection of various Thoracic surgical patients with abstraction, organization, and inputting of data into the appropriate National Thoracic database.
  • Interpret and analyze the data, maintain updates within the database, and communicate with the appropriate parties about the data collected.
  • Ensure the integrity of data and timely harvest submissions according to association definitions and specifications.
  • Act as an educational resource for other members of the team, generate outcome reports with dissemination to physician/surgeons and managers, and participate in meetings and conference calls.
Works Effectively with Patients, Families and Staff 
  • Establish effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Surgery, Medicine, Nursing, Medical Records and the Information Systems Departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the Program.
  • Will also interact with Surgeons and Committee Chair to address variances in chart abstraction details.
  • Contact patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications post-operatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital.
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
Preferred: Master of Science in Nursing, Healthcare Information Technology, and Informatics
 
Certification
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred: SCR, CNOR, CPHQ, or CPPS

Experience
Required: Three years of clinical nursing to include one year in surgery, clinical chart review or data management/abstraction.
Preferred: Abstraction, coding, or Thoracic surgery experience.
