Tumor Registrar
**All candidates must be Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certified by the National Cancer Registry Association (NCRA).**
The Certified Tumor Registrar abstracts and codes information from patient medical records to obtain clinical and research data and impacts the large institutional clinical and research databases.
The Tumor Registry at MD Anderson contains demographic and disease information for all patients assigned a medical record number at MD Anderson, starting with the first patient registered on March 1, 1944. Information is collected for all malignancies over the life of the patient, benign neoplasms seen at MD Anderson and non-neoplastic conditions that affect the patient's cancer treatment or constitute the only diagnosis for the patient.
The MD Anderson Tumor Registry staff provides annual vital status follow-up on patients who have or who have had malignant disease, including foreign patients and patients not definitively treated at MD Anderson. This comprehensive follow-up structure provides the fundamental outcomes information necessary to conduct research on a broad spectrum of clinical research topics.
The mission of the Tumor Registry is to collect, analyze and disseminate high quality data on each patient registered at MD Anderson.
Key Job Functions
Abstract and code information from patient medical records to obtain clinical research data using established classification systems.
Responsible for interactive quality review of abstracted data.
Assign and enter information into coded form.
Abstract data adhering to institutional guidelines which is used internally and to maintain compliance with state and accreditation requirements.
Participate on special projects.
Education:
Required: Associate’s degree in health related field.
Experience:
Required: Two years of clinical data abstracting or related experience.
May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
Certification:
Required: Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Cancer Registry Association (NCRA).
