We are hiring a genetic counselor for our Clinical Cancer Genetics department! The Clinical Cancer Genetics Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to providing hereditary cancer risk assessment and consultation services.
 
Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of specially trained genetic counselors and physicians who work together to provide education, hereditary cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling and genetic testing, individualized cancer screening and prevention programs to people who are concerned about their personal and family history of cancer.
 
The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in genetic counseling or a related field. The department is open to new graduates as well as experienced genetic counselors. 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Genetic Counseling: Provides genetic counseling to individuals identified with predisposing characteristics or at potentially elevated risk for developing cancer. Includes the ability to elicit and interpret individual and family medical and psychosocial histories, provide cancer risk assessment, communicate pertinent disease and risk information clearly, provide counseling regarding genetic testing including the results, and support patients' psychosocial needs. Performs database and primary literature searches as necessary. Assumes on-call responsibilities as assigned.

Counseling Follow-up: Provides follow-up to genetic counseling visits as indicated including arranging consultations with other specialists, computerized risk assessment modeling, completing consultation reports, obtaining outside medical records or specimens, facilitating authorization for patients' insurance coverage for genetic testing, telephone communication with patients, facilitating family communication and requesting follow-up visits. Prepares and presents cases at the weekly case review by multidisciplinary team.

Clinical Liaison:  Serves as primary contact and liaison for specified clinical departments or research groups. Attends appropriate departmental conferences, tumor boards or meetings. Facilitates the identification of high risk patients for genetic counseling and clinical research protocols. Provides genetic screening and counseling services in other care centers as needed.

Clinical Studies and Research: Assists with clinical studies, particularly in research subject recruitment both inside and outside of the institution. Responsibilities include developing educational materials, reviewing patient charts, contacting family members when appropriate, and conducting public and professional presentations. Participates in design, writing or editing of research protocols. Initiates new research projects in consultation with a faculty member and works with the multidisciplinary team to implement these projects.
 
Education: Provides education to the public, students and health care professionals in hereditary cancer and genetic counseling. Supervise students during their cancer genetics rotation, participating in the psychosocial course, and providing student evaluations including the development of appropriate tools to monitor student progress. Identifies and helps develop patient, professional and public education materials and presentations. Provides seminars and presentations as appropriate.

SALARY RANGE
Minimum: $68,800  Midpoint: $86,000  Maximum: $103,200



EDUCATION
Required:  Post-baccalaureate degree in genetic counseling or related field.
Preferred:  None.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Required:  Eligible to apply for active candidate status for the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification exam.

Preferred:  Certified Genetic Counselor.
