Ideal candidate will have a Master's degree and experience with mice. 

The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to perform biological experiments, organize, and maintain laboratory conditions. The Research Assistant II should expect to work on animal (rodent) models, and to perform molecular biological experiments using standard laboratory techniques, but not limited to extraction of DNA/RNA, PCR-based genotyping, western blotting, and other such techniques.

1. Conduct experiments utilizing :
a. Basic protein techniques such as:
• Protein isolation and quantification
• Western blotting
• Immunoprecipitation
b. Basic DNA/RNA techniques such as:
• PCR and RT-PCR
• Isolation and quantification of DNA and RNA
• Prepare plasmid constructs, plasmid isolation
c. Basic cell biology techniques such as:
• Tissue/cell culture, cell count (hemocytometer) and cell viability assays
• Maintaining immortalized cell lines
• Gene editing (preferred)
• Immunofluorescence staining
• DNA transfection

2. Maintain laboratory and records in accordance with good laboratory practice: • Records data from laboratory procedures as directed by supervisor
• Records (by manually writing in a notebook or entering into a computer database via computer keyboard and software program) and evaluates the data as required and/or requested by supervisor.
• Comply with all applicable radiation procedures, chemical safety procedures and biological safety procedures.
• Comply with the NIH Guidelines for Recombinant DNA Research, CDC-NIH Guidelines for Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories and FDA Points to consider relevant to Human Somatic Cell and Gene Therapy.
• Demonstrates and practices laboratory safety precautions.
• Receives verbal and/or written instructions from Research Investigator on standards and specialized laboratory safety procedures.
• Attends annual safety courses required by MDA and others as necessary.
• Handles, stores and disposes of radioactive isotopes, chemically hazardous materials, and bio-hazardous materials in procedure specified to meet with MDACC safety guidelines
• Follows manufacturers’ guidelines regarding the safe handling of all laboratory equipment.
• Collects and accurately calculates experimental data (samples are interpreted by means of reading a computer-generated printout or by manually counting) under the guidance of supervisor, who records final project outcomes.
• Prepares graphs and charts from experimental data by using computer keyboard.
• Performs general duties, monitoring stocks of supplies, performs general reagent preparation, ordering reagents.

3. Teamwork and professional development: 
 • Reads literature and confers with supervisor regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.
• Interact effectively with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, staff and graduate students.
• Assist other laboratory employees with experiments and/or various work assignments when help is requested or as schedule permits.
• Make photocopies of documents using copy machine as necessary and/or requested by supervisor.


Required: Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences. Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.
