The Clinical Data Abstracter in Tumor Registry at MD Anderson Cancer Center abstracts and codes information from the patient's medical record to obtain clinical, operational and research data and for reporting purposes. 


MD Anderson's Tumor Registry is responsible for submitting all cancer cases to the Texas Cancer Registry and the Commission on Cancer.  We are required by Texas State Law to report all cancer patients that present to MD Anderson.  In addition, we submit newly diagnosed cancer cases annually to the National Cancer Database.  Finally, we provide critical data to researchers (publications, grant funded studies) and operational data for administrative decision making on our cancer population. 


The mission of MD Anderson’s Tumor Registry is to contribute to the knowledge of patient care, research and prevention through the collection of complete, accurate and timely data, and by ongoing follow-up of our patients.


KEY JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Abstracts and codes information from patient medical records to obtain clinical and reporting data using established classification systems.
  • Maintains high quality of abstracted data and reviews peers for quality control.
  • Participates on special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.  

Preferred: Associate's degree or higher; preference for medical terminology training (such as classes including Anatomy & Physiology).


Experience

Required: Two years of experience in Tumor Registry, healthcare, or related field. 

Additional years of education may be substituted for required experience on a one to one year basis.
